Contents

Overview

The Midland Railway – Butterley lies on the Ambergate to Pye Bridge Line of the old Midland Railway, although the present-day heritage line terminates at Hammersmith. It is operated by the Midland Railway Trust. The railway is also home to the Golden Valley Light Railway: a narrow-gauge line built on the trackbed of a former ironworks railway.

The line currently runs for 3+12 miles (5.6 km) from Hammersmith via Butterley, Swanwick Junction and Riddings to Ironville, there are plans to extend the line to Pye Bridge in the future, especially to interchange with train services on the Erewash Valley Line.

Stations

Headquarters of the Midland (Heritage) Railway

Current terminus of the heritage MR, til further notice.

Interchanging with passenger rail services on the Erewash Valley Line, in the future.

Special events

The railway runs a variety of special events, ranging from standard Day out with Thomas specials on several weekends and half-terms each year to Gala events featuring the GVLR's stock in addition to the standard gauge collection.

The railway is also licensed to host weddings and parties.

Steam locomotives

The steam engines of the Midland Railway Trust that run passenger services are mostly ex-LMS and BR locomotives of similar designs to each other. Rarer industrial and mainline classes (one from as early as 1866), are usually static in the Swanwick museum site.
